Acne vulgaris affects more than 80% of us to varying degrees as some point in our lives. It is a condition that all would prefer to be without not only because of the physical pain and discomfort, but also the social and cosmetic complications it holds. But what exactly is acne and why do people get it? In this article we’ll have a look at the causes, symptoms and possible treatment options of acne.

Acne vulgaris is not exclusively limited to a particular group of people. The occurrence between blacks and whites are pretty equal. It affects females during puberty more than males and during adulthood males are affected more than females.

There are a few factors that contribute to cause acne to manifest. The first is what is called the hyperproliferisation of the follicle epithelium which causes the hair follicle to get plugged up. It is one of the first signs of acne and possible reasons for this happening may be the effect of androgen hormones, inflammation and a dilution of lipids (like linoleic acid) in the skin because of excess sebum production. Excess sebum production by sebaceous glands in the skin is another culprit. Androgen hormones in particular promote the production of sebum which makes the skin very oily. The next factor that contributes to the formation of acne is a bacteria call Propionibacterium acnes. The bacteria are present in the more advanced stages of acne and its presence cause inflammation which makes the acne lesions so swollen and red.

The areas of the body where acne lesions typically occur is the skin of the face, chest and upper back. There are different kinds of acne lesions and they can be described as follow:

• Closed comedones (whitish lump in the skin due to a clogged sebaceous gland).
• Open comedones (black tipped plugging of the pores of the skin).
• Papules (elevated and inflamed are of the skin without pus).
• Pustules (elevated and inflamed area of the skin containing pus).

The severity of the acne will be judged on the amount of lesions and the degree of inflammation in the comedos, papules and pustules.

From this one can infer what needs to be done to treat acne vulgaris. Skin needs to be cleaned to unblock pores, sebum secretion needs to be minimised and Propionibacterium acne needs to be eradicated. Bathtub Aromatherapy 101

Smell is the sense that’s the most strongly linked to our emotions and memories. You can tell every time you smell something from your childhood—whether it’s that perfume your mom used to wear, the smell of meatloaf in the oven, or the scent of freshly cut grass on a Saturday morning, we’ve all got a few scent triggers that bring us back to a simpler time. It’s no wonder that smells are now believed to have beneficial properties that can cause us to relax, perk up, feel better, or whatever else we need. And if you want to get into aromatherapy, the perfect place to do it is already installed in your house—the bathtub.

When starting on aromatherapy, you’ll encounter two different types of oils: essential and fragrance. Fragrance oils are synthetics, and while they may be fine for perfumes, they aren’t considered ideal for aromatherapy use. Essential oils are more desirable; they’re made from parts of the plant itself: the roots, leaves, stalks, pods, flower petals, etc. They can be very strong, and before using an essential oil in your bathtub, it’s important to do a skin test to determine if you have any allergies. Simply put a drop of the oil on your wrist, and don’t wash it for 24 hours. If you don’t notice any pain, itching, raised welts, or any other reactions during this time, the oil is safe for you to use.

Essential oils are very strong, however, and many aromatherapy experts advocate diluting them in a carrier oil such as sweet almond before applying them to the skin or using them in the bathtub. Only about 5 drops or less should be used in a bath. Here are a few common oils used in bath aromatherapy, and their effects:

Lavender. One of the most common therapeutic oils, lavender is sweet-smelling and makes you smell great once you get out of the bathtub, too. Lavender is believed to have mentally relaxing and soothing properties, and it’s great for anyone who’s had a stressful day. It’s also said to be good for skin conditions such as eczema, headaches, insomnia, dry skin, and hot flashes, and it’s got antiseptic properties as well. It’s very soothing on bug bites and other skin irritations.

Eucalyptus. This one is used for people with respiratory problems. Breathing in eucalyptus-scented steam is said to clear airways and soothe lungs, and there’s no better way to do that than in a bath.

Chamomile. Chamomile, like lavender, is said to be relaxing and soothing. It’s one of the oldest aromatherapy ingredients around, and has been used to treat muscle spasms, reduce tension, and calm agitation. It’s also said to be very beneficial for the skin and the scalp, and is often prescribed to treat acne and dandruff.

Sage. Sage is another ancient aromatherapy ingredient, used in the Ottoman Empire and in Medieval Europe to treat skin conditions, rheumatism, and arthritis. In ancient times, sage was believed to have life-extending properties, and was often prescribed to aging patients for its rejuvenating effects. Nowadays, it’s used for its beneficial effects on swollen joints, as well as on skin.

Tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is used to stimulate the immune system. It improves the body’s ability to respond to viruses and bacteria. It’s good for anyone who’s got a cold or the flu.

Peppermint oil is great for the skin. It clears up acne and serves to dry out particularly oily skin and blemishes. It’s also good for migraines and indigestion.

Citrus oils such as orange and lemon are great mental pick-me-ups. Often included in blends said to relieve depression, these scents cheer you up and give you energy. Great for starting off a big day with a relaxing bath that’s sure to put you in a good mood.

Rosemary is good for aching muscles, nervous tension, premenstrual syndrome, sinus congestion, and indigestion.

Aromatherapy is a great way to spice up an ordinary bath. No matter what physical or mental challenges you’re wrestling with, chances are there’s a scent or scent combination that’s tailor made for you. Experiment with different blends and talk to an aromatherapist for recommendations for the best oils for whatever ails you.

In this day and age of science and technology, one would think that a disorder that affects somewhere between 30 and 70 percent of women would have a clear cure. In the case of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS for short) this just isn’t the case. Ironically, there are still health care providers who doubt that this common ailment even exists, despite being a recognized problem in the health field for over 60 years.

Conventional medical treatments run the gamut from antidepressant drugs such as Prozac or Zoloft to Valium to hormonal treatment, such as the administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Clearly, no set treatment for this problem exists, yet naturopaths have had excellent results treating PMS with a combination of lifestyle changes and natural remedies.

It is clear that PMS is a result of hormonal imbalances in the female body. Several hormonal patterns are typical in a PMS sufferer, the most common being an elevation of the hormone estrogen combined with a reduction of the hormone progesterone. This increased estrogen-to-progesterone ratio can lead to problems with the liver not functioning as it should, reduced levels of serotonin (an important mood-elevating neurotransmitter) in the brain, lower endorphin levels, and alterations in other hormone levels. Also, it is common to find hypothyrodism and elevated prolactin levels in a woman experiencing PMS, so it is important to rule out serious health care issues with an understanding physician.

Typical PMS symptoms include the following: abdominal bloating, acne, anxiety, backache, breast swelling/tenderness, changes in libido, cramps, depression, diarrhea and/or constipation, edema of fingers and ankles, food cravings (especially carbohydrates in the form of sweets), fainting spells, fatigue, headaches, insomnia, joint pain, nervousness, water retention, and personality changes such as drastic mood swings or bursts of anger and/or violence.

In most women, the best form of treatment is to increase progesterone while lowering estrogen in the body. The most popular and highly effective way among naturopaths is to use vitex or chastetree extract. In two surveys of gynecological practices in Germany, physicians graded chastetree berry extract as good or very good in the treatment of PMS, showing that even conventional medicine in other countries realize the effectiveness of chastetree berry extract. In a study of over 1500 women taking chastetree berry extract, one third of the women experienced complete resolution of their symptoms, while another 57% reported significant improvement; 90% reported improvement or resolution overall. Chastetree berry apparently has profound effects on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, and is able to normalize the secretion of other hormones, namely progesterone and estrogen. Best results occur after three months of treatment in most cases.

Another popular herb in Europe for treating PMS symptoms is black cohosh. Black cohosh was widely used by the American Indians for the relief of menstrual cramps and menopause. Black cohosh seems to work by reducing feelings of depression, anxiety, and tension. It helps stabilize moods and is an excellent tonic for the nervous system. Recommended dosage for PMS symptoms is 2 mL daily in tincture form.

Another herb that is helpful in hormone balancing is dong quai. This herb has demonstrated it’s usefulness as an uterine tonic, and can ease the discomforts of menstrual cramps. A benefit to dong quai may be it’s ability to increase glucose utilization by the liver and uterus – especially helpful to the many women who experience glucose intolerance along with their PMS symptoms. The tincture form is preferred, and the recommended dosage is 4 mL daily, starting on day 14 of the menstrual cycle and continuing until menstruation begins.

To increase naturally occuring progesterone in the body, many women have found wild yam extract to be beneficial. This extract contains natural progesterone and has proved effective in alleviating several symptoms of PMS, including cramps, headache, mood swings, depression, and insomnia.

Nutritional considerations are also important in treating PMS. Many natural health care practitioners recommend women suffering from PMS to make several dietary changes, including reducing the amount of sugars and simple carbohydrates in the diet, and increasing fresh fruits and vegetables along with quality whole grain cereals and breads. High protein foods are also important – beans, peas, lentils, nuts and seeds are all good sources, as well as broiled chicken, turkey, and fish. Increasing the use of soy may be helpful for some women, as soy is an excellent source of phytoestrogens (plant estrogens), which bind to estrogen receptors in the body, thereby competing with estrogen naturally occuring in the body, reducing the amount of estrogen overall.

Calcium supplementation has also been beneficial for many women, but one must be cautious when considering calcium sources. For example, commercial milk is often laden with estrogen from injections given to the cows at the dairy. In fact, several sources indicate that calcium via milk is a possible causative factor of PMS, perhaps due to the combination of calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus, which reduces the magnesium absorption by the body. However, women who took a calcium supplement of 1000 mg daily showed significant symptom improvements in several studies.

It’s important to try these treatments and see which work best. Because PMS may have so many different causes, not all treatments will be appropriate.
